Canary Islands' Advanced Diagnostic Project for Vineyards

Overview

The Canary Islands' government has formalized a cooperation agreement with the University of La Laguna and its General Foundation to develop advanced diagnostic techniques for harmful organisms affecting vineyards, crucial as climate change intensifies.

This project aims to understand how changing temperatures, droughts, and extreme weather influence grapevine health and pests, directly impacting the region's vital wine industry, which accounts for over 6,400 hectares of vineyards and numerous prestigious wine labels.

Key Focus Areas

  • Surveying vineyards
  • Detecting viruses, fungi, and pests
  • Studying their behavior in altered climate conditions

Researchers will gather data through:

  • Field sampling
  • Laboratory analysis
  • Digital tools, including a mobile app to help farmers and villagers identify diseases more effectively.

Funding and Objectives

  • Budget: 150,000 euros from the regional government
  • Goals:
    • Enhance disease resistance
    • Safeguard the production of renowned local wines
    • Support rural communities

Significance

This collaboration underscores the importance of proactive scientific research in safeguarding an industry deeply intertwined with Canary Island culture, landscape, and economy, as well as addressing broader climate challenges affecting agriculture in the region.

"This initiative will focus on surveying vineyards, detecting viruses, fungi, and pests, and studying their behavior in the altered climate conditions."
