Reconstruction of Electricity Line in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Project Overview
The Spanish government has authorized the reconstruction of a 66 kV underground and aerial electricity line in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
This project, requested by Red Eléctrica in February 2024, aims to improve energy reliability by connecting the Jinámar, Telde, and Marzagán circuits to the El Sabinal substation.
A key highlight is that the project underwent public consultation and received favorable reports from local authorities, including the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Las Palmas city council.
Construction Details
- The construction includes a 670-meter line, with:
- 115 meters aerial
- 555 meters underground
- One notable change involves crossing the GC-100 road:
- Originally planned as an open trench
- Now revised to be done via tunnel or boring method, complying with road safety regulations.
Regulatory and Environmental Approvals
- Authorities have declared this infrastructure of 'public utility' and 'general interest,' emphasizing its importance for energy security in the Canary Islands.
- Multiple agencies, including the regional environment and transport departments, have approved the project, provided that:
- Technical, safety, and environmental standards are met.
- The project respects territorial plans
- Necessary permits are obtained, especially for work on public roads and protected areas.
Significance and Impact
The authorization offers a clear route for the project to proceed, aiming to bolster the island's electrical infrastructure and ensure a more reliable energy supply for residents and industries.
