Canary Islands EU Funds Management Amendment

Background

The Canary Islands government has amended an agreement with Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR) to better manage the distribution of €2021-2027 EU funds aimed at supporting local fishing and aquaculture operators.

Originally, the government pledged to deliver funds to GMR early in the funding cycle, but practical challenges prompted a change.

New Arrangement

  • Funds will now be released to GMR based on when subsidy beneficiaries receive their payment resolutions.
  • Most disbursements are scheduled to occur within the relevant budget year.
  • Specifically, for applications submitted in:
    • the first half of the year, funds are allocated during that same year.
    • the second half, disbursement can extend into the following year, provided there is sufficient budget credit.

Objectives and Impact

  • This update aims to streamline the administrative process and ensure timely support to local fishing operators who face rising costs.
  • It underscores the government’s commitment to making aid delivery more flexible and responsive to real-world conditions.
  • Highlights ongoing efforts to optimize the management of EU maritime funds, ensuring local producers benefit more efficiently and sustainably.

Significance

This modification represents a practical step to improve how public funds reach those critical industries vital for the Canary Islands’ economy and food sovereignty.
