Canary Islands Government Launches Potato Farming Subsidy Scheme
Overview
The Canary Islands government has launched a new subsidy scheme to support local potato farmers for the 2026 season. This initiative falls under the European Community's agricultural aid program, specifically targeting producers of table potatoes.
Eligible farmers must meet certain active farming criteria and are encouraged to apply for financial help based on the surface area of their potato fields.
Aid Package
The aid package includes:
- A basic grant of up to €1,240 per hectare
- Additional support for farmers organized into producer groups—up to €1,700 per hectare
- A 10% bonus for farmers who have previously received youth farming subsidies and maintain that status
Application Process
Farmers have two application windows:
- One within 45 days after the official publication
- Another from June 1 to June 30, 2026, depending on their planting period
Goals
This subsidy aims to:
- Boost local agricultural productivity
- Support young farmers
- Promote sustainable farming practices
"This initiative is part of our efforts to invigorate rural economies and promote sustainable farming in the Canary Islands," said an official.
