Canary Islands' Funding for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans

Overview

The Canary Islands' Public Works, Housing, and Mobility Department has announced the allocation of over €3 million to support sustainable urban mobility plans (PMUS) across municipalities with up to 100,000 residents. This funding aims to help local governments develop and implement strategies to improve transportation infrastructure, reduce congestion, and promote eco-friendly travel options.

The recently increased budget, which now exceeds €3 million, allows for a broader distribution of funds to eligible towns through two lines:

  • one for planning and updating mobility plans
  • another for executing specific projects like new sidewalks and parking improvements.

Application Process and Evaluation

Municipalities submitted their applications by April 30, 2025, and these underwent a thorough review process. Some projects were deemed non-eligible, such as:

  • road extensions funded in previous years
  • activities not aligned with the grant's focus on sustainable transportation.

Following evaluations, the Government has approved funding for selected towns, with a few declining or requesting advance payments.

Approved Projects

The approved projects include:

  • urban sidewalk improvements
  • accessibility upgrades
  • parking management initiatives

These projects are aimed at making mobility safer, greener, and more accessible.

Emphasis on Transparency and Broader Goals

The Department emphasized transparency throughout the process, with clear timelines for project execution and requirements for beneficiaries.

The allocations are part of a broader strategy to:

  • foster sustainable urban growth
  • reduce traffic emissions
  • improve the quality of life for residents.

"This initiative reflects our commitment to creating more sustainable, accessible, and efficient urban mobility options for all residents in the Canary Islands."
