Canary Islands Emergency Aid for Volcano-Affected Businesses

Background

On July 29, 2025, the Canary Islands government announced a package of emergency aid totaling €203,497 to help businesses and self-employed workers impacted by the ongoing volcanic eruptions on La Palma.

This financial support targets those whose activities have been totally and permanently hindered due to toxic gas emissions and other eruption-related restrictions, particularly in the designated exclusion zones.

The aid follows previous measures introduced in 2021 and early 2025, designed to address the economic fallout from the eruptions that began in 2021.

Beneficiaries were verified through official technical reports confirming their location within restricted zones, ensuring the help reaches those most affected. The grants are allocated from a dedicated budget line, with disbursements managed via collaboration with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce.

Conditions for Recipients

  • Provide necessary information
  • Accept the aid
  • Agree to future financial controls

The government emphasizes transparency and accountability, with provisions for potential reimbursement if further irregularities are found.

Purpose

This latest measure aims to provide vital economic relief during the ongoing crisis, helping affected small businesses and self-employed workers to survive the disruptions caused by the volcano.
