Canary Islands Government Funds New Archaeological Excavation Extension in Lanzarote
Canary Islandsā Archaeological Research Funding Extension
The Canary Islands' Ministry of Universities, Science, and Culture has officially approved a funding extension for ongoing archaeological research at San Marcial de Rubicón on Lanzarote.
This comes after the project's scientific team uncovered 13 previously unknown burials, including four of children, prompting an urgent need for additional excavations and analysis.
To maintain the momentum, the government will contribute an extra 150,000 euros, split evenly between the two local universities involved:
- University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
- University of La Laguna
The new funds will facilitate detailed studies of the burial site, which is crucial for preserving regional cultural heritage.
"The archaeological site offers vital insights into the islandsā ancient past and attracts interest from researchers and tourists alike."
This development highlights a broader commitment to protecting Canary Islandsā rich history, which often receives limited attention amidst modern development.
The extra funding ensures that the project can adapt to unexpected discoveries and continue uncovering valuable historical information without delays.
Many residents and cultural advocates see this as a positive step toward fostering local identity and tourism growth, grounded in the islandsā unique history.
The projectās expansion underscores how archaeological work remains a key piece of Canariasā cultural and educational mission.
