Canary Islands' New Cooperation Agreement for Youth Internships
Overview
The Canary Islands' Service of Employment (SCE) has officially announced a new cooperation agreement with I Mas D Capacitación Profesional S. XXI, to facilitate unpaid internships for young unemployed individuals. Signed on December 17, 2025, this pact aims to help young people aged 18 to 25, and up to 29 for those registered with the National Youth Guarantee System, gain practical experience despite limited or no prior work history.
Program Details
- Participating companies will host young interns for a maximum of six months.
- Interns will receive a monthly stipend of at least €720.
- The company will cover any social security costs.
- The government will contribute 80% of the internship stipend through subsidies.
Goals and Context
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to:
- Boost youth employment.
- Reduce the apprenticeship gap faced by many young residents in the Canary Islands.
It complements existing regulations, including the Royal Decree 1543/2011, which governs non-labor internships, and supports the strategic goal of improving employability among young job seekers.
Oversight and Collaboration
The agreement includes mechanisms for:
- Oversight and proper follow-up.
- Ensuring compliance by both companies and participants.
- Monitoring and eventual certification.
Its implementation highlights ongoing collaboration between public administration and private firms to create more pathways into the labor market for young Spaniards, addressing local employment challenges.
