Canary Islands Launch Support for Local Dairy Production in 2025
Canary Islands Announces Financial Aid to Boost Local Dairy Production
Overview
The Canary Islands government has announced a financial aid program aimed at boosting local dairy production for the 2025 campaign. The initiative targets both dairy industry players who buy local cow's milk for cheese and other dairy products, as well as milk producers themselves.
Funded by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEAGA), the program allocates over 6 million euros divided into two main parts:
- around 3.56 million euros for the dairy industry
- nearly 2.7 million euros for local farmers
Support Details
Producers and dairy companies can receive significant support per ton of milk:
- 132 euros for industry helpers
- up to 133 euros for farmers in certain islands, including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro.
Additionally, farmers who previously participated in rural development schemes will get a 10% bonus.
Application Process
- Applications are open now.
- Deadlines are staggered based on when the milk was purchased or produced within the year.
Objectives and Impact
Residents and industry stakeholders should act quickly, as the aid aims to:
- reinforce local agriculture
- ensure a steady supply of regional dairy products
This move underlines the island’s commitment to supporting local farmers and reducing dependency on imports, fostering a more resilient and self-sufficient food system.
