Canary Islands Strengthen Long-Term Care Infrastructure with EU Funds
Canary Islands Care Facilities Modernization Updates
Background
The Canary Islands government announced a series of updates to a key agreement aimed at modernizing care facilities across Lanzarote. Originally signed in October 2024, the agreement facilitates 9.2 million euros in European Union funds from Next Generation EU to upgrade or build new residential, non-residential, and day centers for long-term care.
Revisions and Expansions
In May 2026, new revisions expand the project scope, including:
- The addition of 13 new care plazasâbringing the total to 113âincluding facilities for disabled people, elderly dependency care, and multi-purpose service centers.
- Replacing some planned constructions in HarĂa and Yaiza with new projects in Teguise, such as a retirement home and day centers.
Goals and Outcomes
These investments aim to ensure that care facilities meet modern standards, aligning with Spainâs broader recovery and resilience plans.
- If Lanzarote reaches the set target of 683 renovated or new care spots, the project can continue until the end of 2026.
Significance
This effort illustrates the region's commitment to improving infrastructure for its vulnerable populations, leveraging EU funds to adapt to new care models. It also highlights how flexible financing adjustments can help local governments respond quickly to evolving needs, maximizing the impact of recovery funds.
