Canary Islands' New Energy Storage Project

Project Overview

The Canary Islands' government has announced a public consultation for a new energy storage project in San Agustín, Gran Canaria. The project, led by Naos Energy IX, S.L., involves:

  • Installing a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60.18 MWh, enough to power roughly 6.5 hours.
  • The system includes 12 containers spread over a 1,000-square-meter area.
  • Total investment of over 6 million euros.

Once operational, the facility will help stabilize the local power grid by storing excess renewable energy, which is crucial for increasing renewable adoption and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Infrastructure and Connectivity

  • The project features an underground energy line to connect with the existing San Agustín substation.

Public Engagement and Approval Process

  • The government is inviting public feedback over the next 30 days before proceeding with an environmental impact assessment.

Significance

"This initiative marks a step forward in the Canary Islands' renewable energy ambitions, promising a more resilient and sustainable energy system for residents and visitors alike."
