Canary Islands 'Smart Data Canarias' Initiative

Overview

The Canary Islands' Regional Government has announced the publication of a key agreement between the Tourism and Employment Department and the hotel associations forming the 'Smart Data Canarias' network.

This alliance will receive a €595,900 EU-funded subsidy as part of Spain's Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience plan under Next Generation EU.

The project aims to boost tourism competitiveness and sustainability through a collaborative data intelligence system. Four major hotel associations—ASHOTEL, ASOFUER, FEHT, and FTL—will develop independent cloud-based data warehouses, enabling secure interconnection and real-time monitoring of tourism indicators.

Project Goals and Phases

The initiative aligns with the broader EU strategy to enhance resilience and sustainable development in tourist territories, especially in island regions heavily dependent on tourism.

It includes several phases:

  • needs analysis
  • architecture design
  • implementation
  • pilot testing
  • stakeholder training
  • extensive communication efforts to promote transparency and collaboration

Funding Details

  • The funding mechanism emphasizes strict compliance with environmental, data protection, and public procurement regulations.
  • Uniquely, the subsidy is granted directly due to its public interest and the specialized data expertise of the associations.

Timeline and Objectives

  • The project must conclude by December 2025.

"The initiative aims to position the Canary Islands as a top tourist destination while adhering to EU climate and digital standards."
