Canary Islands Radio Licenses Renewal

The Canary Islands government has officially renewed the radio licenses for local broadcasters Radio Popular, S.A.-COPE, ensuring their service continues across the region. These licenses, initially issued in 2011, now have a 15-year extension, allowing the stations to keep transmitting on their respective frequencies in Icod de los Vinos, San CristĂłbal de La Laguna, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, MogĂĄn, Santa Cruz de La Palma, and Los Llanos de Aridane.

This renewal confirms that broadcasters meet all legal and technical requirements, including spectrum availability and timely payment of fees. Authorities verified that no obstacles or spectrum conflicts prevent these stations from continuing service, maintaining vital communication links within the local community.

Renewing licenses automatically, rather than through a new public tender, reflects a stable regulatory framework in the Canary Islands for local media. This move supports consistent regional broadcasting—an essential service amid Spain’s diverse media landscape—while ensuring regulatory compliance for the stations.

The decision, signed by regional authorities, emphasizes the government’s commitment to supporting local media infrastructure, providing stability for broadcasters and the audiences they serve. The licenses will now remain valid until 2041, under the condition that stations stick to their current obligations.
